Richard joined the LPC in October 2022 as Project Implementation & Support Lead. As a non-pharmacist, he has a lifetime of experience in community pharmacy management. From 1988 – 2004 he was a director of his family business (J. R. Smith (Chemists) Ltd.), being the 3rd generation of the family to run the business started by his grandfather in 1927. In 2004 the business was sold to Murrays Healthcare, and after a short period of handing over the business, he took on a new role of Assistant to the Pharmacy Superintendent, a post which he held for 17 years until November 2021. He gained his dispensing qualification in 2005, a Certificate in Management Studies from Worcester University in 2006 and numerous pharmacy related courses including being both a Healthy Living Champion and Leader. He worked closely with the Superintendent to support 25 community pharmacies in the group and brings a wealth of knowledge to support our contractors, particularly around both NHS and locally commissioned services.

In his spare time, he has volunteered as a local magistrate for the past 23 years, and also enjoys the inland waterways, volunteering as a lock-keeper for the Canal & Rivers Trust. He is also a keen gardener and loves to travel.
